Thursday 12th May 2011. Today was the start of my latest adventure. I took the Eurostar to Lille, a city that numerous people had told me is "beautiful - you must go!" They weren't wrong.

I arrived at around lunchtime, checked into my hotel (I splashed out on tonight - a double room all to myself, what luxury!) and went off exploring. It really is a stunning city, full of historic buildings and quaint, French-looking winding, cobbled streets. I saw the Opera, the Vielle Bourse, the Theatre du Nord, l'Eglise Saint-Maurice, the Hotel de Ville, the Porte de Paris, the Palais des Beaux-Arts and the Prefecture, before stopping to enjoy the beautiful weather by the fountain in Place de la Republique. I sat there for about an hour, before the sky clouded over and the temperature dropped.

I walked back up to Cathedrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille - a beautiful cathedral, far lighter and less sinister than the Notre Dame de Paris, with an interesting modern facade at the front of the stunning gothic original. I did a fair amount of people-watching both in and around the church (I've noticed churches are great places for that!) and then went back in the direction of Lille-Europe, to photograph the strikingly colourful flower sculptures I'd walked past earlier as I left the station.

Dinner tonight was a very fitting welcome back to France - steak with gratin dauphinois, followed by creme brulee at Hippo. Delicious! It was doubly satisfying because eating in a proper restaurant alone was second of the two super-liberating things I've always wanted to do (the first being to go to the cinema alone, which I did in July 2009 while spending 5 weeks in Chamonix.) Tomorrow, Paris! I'm coming home...
